What is DELF?

The DELF (Diplôme d’études en Langue Française) is an official diploma issued by the French Ministry of Education. Open to all ages and all audiences, the diploma is valid for life.

There are four language proficiency levels according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): A1, A2, B1, and B2. Each exam is independent, so it is up to you to choose the one that corresponds to your level. Don't worry, we will detail each level and its uses below.

The exams consist of two parts:
- Group test: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing;
- Individual test: speaking and interaction

The test duration varies for each level:
- A1: 1 hour 20 minutes (group) + 5 to 7 minutes (individual)
- A2: 1 hour 40 minutes (group) + 6 to 8 minutes (individual)
- B1: 1 hour 55 minutes (group) + 15 minutes (individual)
- B2: 2 hours 30 minutes (group) + 20 minutes (individual)

What is TCF?

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is a standardized test valid for two years, which assesses the candidate's level according to the CEFR based on the score obtained by the candidate. There are different versions of the TCF adapted to various audiences, and it can be taken on paper or on a computer at the exam center.

The exam consists of compulsory and additional tests.

Compulsory tests:
- Listening comprehension (25 min)
- Mastery of language structures (15 min)
- Reading comprehension (45 min)

 Additional tests:
- Oral expression (12 min)
- Written expression (60 min)

Both the DELF and TCF are internationally recognized and frequently used by foreign institutions and ministries.

 Why are TCF / DELF so important?

The DELF is an official diploma that is valid for life. It is useful for:
- Studying in France or in a French-speaking country (usually DELF B2 or DALF C1, depending on the institution);
- Obtaining French citizenship (DELF B1 required);
- Highlighting your level of French on your résumé to increase your chances of getting a job that requires French.

The TCF, due to its limited validity of two years, is more commonly used for specific purposes:
- It is useful for immigration procedures (Canada, Quebec);
- For admission to certain universities that favor its flexibility;
- To quickly and accurately assess your level of French.

 How to succeed in the DEFL/TCF exam?

French speaking practice French pronunciation

Passing an exam depends not only on your level of French, but also on how well you prepare. Here are some simple but effective tips:

- Practice regularly: it's better to practice for 30 minutes every day than for 4 hours once a week. Regular practice helps you progress faster and makes learning less tiring.

- Put yourself in real-life conditions: doing mock exams helps you manage your time and develop good reflexes. Doing this once a week helps you assess your progress and adjust your preparation.

- Familiarize yourself with the format: each exam has a specific structure. Knowing the types of tests in advance reduces stress and avoids unpleasant surprises. Practice with mock exams, have your work corrected, and learn from your mistakes.
